Director of Public Relations and Fundraising

Job Brief

The South Carolina Public Charter School District (SCPCSD) is looking for an energetic and self-motivated Public Relations and Fundraising Director to serve the district and its schools. The incumbent will be responsible for developing and managing all fundraising efforts; planning and executing large scale events; working with the Chief Deputy Superintendent on a variety of tasks; implementing a clear communications strategy; and managing the District’s public relations and social media platforms.


  • Executes all requirements of successful fundraising, including but not limited to researching prospective donors, identifying and contacting potential donors, executing major-gifts fundraising (face to face interaction with donors who can give large amounts), developing planned-giving fundraisers, in-kind donation solicitation, cultivation and expansion of sponsorship development and fulfillment, and organizing campaigns or events to solicit donations.
  • Develops strong fundraising efforts including but not limited to creation of a strong fundraising message that appeals to potential donors, use of online platforms to raise donations, maintenance of accurate records of donor information and amounts, evaluation of the success of previous fundraising events, and hosting large scale annual fundraising events.
  • Manages all legal reporting requirements, including knowledge and implementation of fundraising laws, including tax deduction documentation for donors.
  • Manages all aspects of volunteer committees and volunteer coordination in fundraising procedures and practices as well as event logistics, and develop staffing and volunteer plans for each event to ensure quality standards are met.
  • Develops, coordinates, and implements event logistics including: researching, proposing and securing possible venues for functions based on budget, geography, accessibility, aesthetic appeal, and availability; event publicity; event budgets; collateral material design; production and distribution; as well as planning, implementation and follow up including thank you notes for special events.
  • Coordinates and tracks all FOIA requests according to state statutes and regulations.
  • Coordinates and oversees internal and external special events held at the Bounds Auditorium and professional development rooms including contracting for services from vendors such as caterers, florists, parking services, security, photography, technology..
  • Prepares formal briefing materials on communication strategies as well as event planning with final details for event hosts and leadership team.
  • Develops and maintains event databases and planning tools, as well as maintain master event files and documentation to aid in planning and executing future events.
  • Designs, implements and oversees a comprehensive communications and external affairs strategy.
  • Develops and implements an integrated and multi-faceted communications plan to support the full spectrum of district activities, including fundraising, authorizing, programs, communications, school communications, general media, advocacy and community engagement.
  • Serve as “Chief Content Creator,” curating stories from student, alumni, families and teachers and ensuring consistent brand messaging across print and digital (e.g. social media, email, website, video) content for schools within the SCPCSD portfolio. Leverages first-hand narratives in storytelling across all forms of media.
  • In collaboration with the Superintendent’s Cabinet, leads the production of the SCPCSD Annual Report, fact sheets, pitch decks and other external-facing communications. Builds and maintains a library of high-use messaging and materials.
  • Supports the Superintendent and other district leaders in their roles as spokespeople; writes and/or edits messaging for public speaking. Partners with the Superintendent and his/her Cabinet to manage crises as they arise and communicate with all necessary internal and external stakeholders.
  • Provides communications support for the planning and execution of school, fundraising and community events, including creating invitations, programming (e.g. speeches, videos, etc.), and other collateral.
  • Seeks out opportunities to participate in community activities, events, and meetings, ensuring the district is seen as a regular, active invested participant in the local communities.
  • Manages and optimizes systems for email marketing, social media, website content management and other communications tools; make recommendations for process or systems improvements as needed.
  • Ensures strong visual brand consistency and visual appeal, partnering with graphic designers, photographers, video producers and other external creative partners.

Preferred skills and qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required, with evidence of strong and diverse organizational communications, and excellent organizational skills
  • Demonstrated successful experience in public relations, journalism, communication/mass media, English or business
  • Demonstrated success in fundraising from a variety of donors
  • Ability to proactively engage with a variety of stakeholders
  • Advanced capabilities with multi-media, including but not limited to multi-media platforms

Employment Type: Full Time

Location: Columbia, South Carolina

Remote Work: In office four days a week, telecommuting one day a week.

Working Hours: 7.5 Hour Day between 6:00AM and 6:00PM
